    The novel Lord of the Flies takes place in the near future from when the book was written. The time period in which the story is supposed to take place is when nuclear war breaks out across the world. This time period is important to the novel because it is the reason why the boys in the story end up on the deserted island there. During this time, the reader assumes that a widespread war has broken out across the world and the children are on a plane to escape their destroyed home country of England. The story takes place on a desert island located somewhere near the Pacific Ocean. The island the characters land on is unique in that it is home to a small mountain and abundant wildlife and food. The island influences the main character a lot and also influences the other characters. The setting of this story causes the main character to act the way he does; it offers many rules and actions that help the other inhabitants of the island cope with what they live in.
