    It is different from the appetitive soul because the spiritual soul would endure unpleasant conditions in order to win whatever is at stake (440d), aligning itself more with the rational soul (440th). However, the spiritual soul is different from the rational soul, in that small children and animals are born with great minds, but only develop rationality later in life, if at all, and therefore the two cannot be synonymous (441b). The importance of mentioning children and animals in this argument is that they can be seen as somewhat pure and uncorrupted souls, and therefore can be used as a marker of how the soul actually is.
