  • Essay / Understanding the political situation in Myanmar

The Myanmar government announced the results of its elections in December 2010. This led to a new civil clash between the military junta and a civilian group who claimed that the results of the elections elections were not fair. The situation in Myanmar has immediate implications for the Southeast Asian region. The international community has criticized ASEAN for its failure to take adequate measures to stabilize the situation in Myanmar. This also led to the failure of the ASEAN WAY and the principle of non-interference. Key recommendations1. Opening civil society and a more demanding policy towards Myanmar could improve short-term opportunities in Myanmar, within ASEAN members and ASEAN.2. The potential for a fracture in the junta structure exists and constitutes a possibility for the emergence of alternative political voices. Increased exposure to more professional militaries and the outside world through ASEAN could encourage the government to consider opening up civilian space.3. Another possibility is the evolution of autonomous networks and civil spaces outside of government through the support of international non-governmental organizations. Problems in Myanmar A number of regional security issues also persist. Concerns include the Myanmar government's nuclear ambitions and potential alliance with North Korea; the failure to stem the rampant illegal drug trade; the flow of refugees to neighboring states; and the risk of instability and civil war in the northern provinces of the country. The international community is also concerned about persistent human rights violations in Myanmar. Beyond these immediate problems, the international community should also consider the missed opportunity cost of development in Myanmar. The country......middle of document......rtant how to engage senior military officers of the military junta to engage in a dialogue session with ASEAN to give insight and values more professional military personnel so as to recommend them to make changes in the administration of the junta. As I mentioned earlier, ASEAN needs to address the stabilization of the political situation in Thailand, as this would lead to more pressure on the junta administration to reform the changes in its political situation . It is also necessary for the leaders of ASEAN members to sit down to reform the principle of ASEAN WAY and non-interference, which is suitable for the Cold War and post-Cold War, but more so . The stabilization of Myanmar will become a major obstacle for ASEAN to embark on increased trade growth and liberalization, leading to the decline in the prosperity and growth of members' economies in the future..
