Le Fanu veils the true meaning of “Carmilla” by presenting it as a vampire story, which is great because writing “Carmilla” as a vampire story avoids the reader to feel overwhelmed by the ideas of the true reality of the story. Her main goal in writing this story was to challenge a society that is very afraid of change or being questioned. According to Sheri R. Wohl, “Carmilla” is “far more frightening than the monsters that inhabit the stories. They are frightening because they reflect much of the truth about both society and human behavior that persists across generations and centuries” (50).
