    IntroductionAttention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurobehavioral disorder in children and adolescents that can lead to increased levels of hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity not normal. Children with this condition are very likely to present symptoms even when they are adolescents, and adolescents with ADHD are in turn at high risk of functional impairment which can have serious consequences on their quality of life. In general, children and adolescents with ADHD also face a higher risk of developing other psychiatric illnesses. [1]Methylphenidate (MPH), which goes by the trade name Ritalin™, is, among other indications, one of the main medications prescribed for ADHD. MPH evokes pharmacological pathways and psychotropic effects similar (but not identical) to those produced by cocaine and amphetamines. The drug has been prescribed and administered safely for over forty years, but has recently attracted attention and raised questions about its wide use among students studying for exams without a medical or psychiatric diagnosis. It has been found that its use can even be encouraged by parents and guardians. The use of ADHD medications without a prescription, also called nonmedical use, is well documented. It is characteristic that in the United States, in schools with very competitive admission standards, prevalence rates can even exceed 20%.
