Essay / Genetically Modified Foods Controversy - 1748
Over the past decade, there have been many debates on the topic of genetically modified foods. It has been questioned whether these products benefit society more than they harm it. We have not had enough time to study the long-term effects of this type of food, but recent discoveries have shown that this area offers great potential. Many people want to see genetically modified foods banned because they are uncomfortable with the idea, but this type of thinking is completely illogical. Our society should be more tolerant of genetically modified foods because they are a great way to feed our growing population, additional nutrients can be added to foods, and they give us a wider and cheaper variety of foods. To better understand the controversy over genetically modified foods. modified foods, it is important to understand what exactly they are. Oak Ridge National Laboratory defines genetic modification as “a special set of technologies that alter the genetic makeup of organisms such as animals, plants, or bacteria” (Oak Ridge National Laboratory). Naturally, when these organisms reproduce, their genes are shuffled and the offspring receive a random set of parental genes. When scientists create genetically modified foods, they use this process that occurs in nature and eliminate the randomness. They select the desired gene, deliver it to the organism, and then mass produce it. It's simply a way for scientists to ensure that organisms will grow to meet our needs and expectations, leaving nothing to chance. When people voice their opinions against genetically modified foods, they often don't realize how much the world depends on them. . Today, there are over a billion people who don't have enough... middle of paper ... greed, not genetic engineering. People need to be properly informed about these modified foods before action is taken. People in uniform who make drastic decisions can be dangerous. Genetically modified foods have enormous untapped potential. Today, many people are still uncomfortable with this concept, but hopefully we will see greater acceptance in the near future. The idea is relatively new and there is still much to know about the method. This project has already shown great promise and further research could lead to greater achievements. Genetically modified foods have both economic and humanitarian benefits and may even become a necessity to satisfy our growing population. Biotechnological crops""Farmers victims"
