Feminist criticism was presented throughout the past by men, until the 1920s. Women were deprived of social power and were not given the opportunity to express. Their job was to clean, take care of their husbands and children. According to Donald Hall in his book Literary and Cultural Theory, he states: “Language, institutions, and social power structures have reflected patriarchal interests throughout history; it has a profound impact on women's ability to express themselves and the quality of their daily lives” (202). Hall's theory is presented in The Awakening and "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin and "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. These three samples provide specific snippets of feminist analysis of how they are carried out throughout life and are also considered simply as an object. Additionally, the women suffered from depression and attempted to break a stereotypical belief about the role of women.
