Romanticism is fundamentally the focus on emotion, nature, and emotional expression in imaginative form. There is an increased interest in nature and an emphasis on the individual's expression of emotions as well as individualism. People enjoyed freedom in most aspects of their lives and rebelled against social and political norms while choosing imagination over reason. In the novel "The Picture of Dorian Gray", different elements of romanticism have been used to further explore the theme of art, love and self-obsession, all of which are very evident throughout the text . Romanticism, otherwise known as being melodramatic, came in very handy during Dorian's selfish quests toward the pursuit of pleasure and obsession that most, if not all, of the characters in the book seemed to have for youth and eternal beauty of Dorian. Romanticism also played an important role when Dorian fell in love with Sibyl, as well as Lord Henry's hedonistic lifestyle and the strong male relationships present in the novel.
