  • Essay / The 1942 film Casablanca: Humphrey Bogart - 907

The 1942 film "Casablanca" depicts a World War II enclave where refugees fled Nazi Europe and used this unoccupied city as a refuge while continuing their dreams of coming to America. . The main character is Rick Blaine, played by Humphrey Bogart, owner of a nightclub and casino in unoccupied Morocco during the Nazi era. Blaine, whose only goal seems to be money, illuminates a sense of arrogance and self-righteousness as he helps collect necessary immigration documents for those willing to pay the price for their freedom. Deep in his memory are reflections of a woman he once loved, Ilsa Lund, played by Ingrid Bergman. The third main role was that of Paul Henreid who played Ilsa's husband in the film. Victor Laszlo, a Jewish activist fleeing the German regime, is believed to have died after being captured and placed in a concentration camp, during which time his wife ( Ilsa ) fled to Paris and eventually had an affair with Rick Blaine . The ethical concepts of “good and evil” from the 1940s are well represented in Casablanca. Evil is not only depicted by the actors who played the Nazi soldiers, but it can also be felt in the viewer's mind. One must consider the wartime mindset of the American people at the time the film was made and the implications that filled the setting. In the 1940s, the United States was still a mostly Christian nation, whose moral character was based solely on religious beliefs. Graphic and seductive scenes that would be included in the making of Casablanca were omitted so as not to offend viewers or their moral values. In order to adhere to the theory of divine command, scenes that involved the actual act of killing...... middle of paper ......o survive and flee from inevitable evil. As World War II raged, American viewers could feel fear and anxiety as well as compassion for the characters. Although some films can be rewritten to achieve a better effect on viewers, Casablanca cannot be remade. The simple fact that the evil of the times was a reality of the times prevents this film from having the same effect on audiences. Works CitedWallis, HB and Curtiz, M. (producer and director).
