Living in India has given me many opportunities to experience diversity in many ways. I lived a traveling life because my father was in the Air Force, which required us to constantly move cities. I changed half a dozen schools before I finally graduated. It remains a touching and vivid experience where I lived with people from diverse cultural backgrounds ranging from the Kannada Brahmins of South India to the tribal people of Nagaland in the Far East. Adventure sports in the Himalayan range, coupled with camel rides in the Thar Desert and folk music in my colorful home state of Rajasthan, have diversified my experiences. This has contributed to my aesthetic development and is useful as I use theories and models from a variety of fields in my interdisciplinary work. I like interacting with people from different cities; country itself and live memorable experiences with them. I learned German for three years and I would like to practice it more often. As a member of Indian-German society, Jaipur broadened my understanding of cross-cultural barriers. Truth be told, I learned that there are no barriers; people want to love, learn and share with others. Northwestern University has a diverse, multicultural student population, which would give me the opportunity to learn and explore beyond research. Interacting with fellow students and researchers from diverse academic and cultural backgrounds has occupied a large part of my life, helping me in multiple ways. During some recent research projects, my multidisciplinary background allowed me to help others with concepts from fields I knew, while discussions with them helped me develop ideas. Here I was part of an extremely diverse group where disadvantaged people from distant villages rubbed shoulders with people from wealthy families and worked together. Having lived more than three-quarters of my life surrounded by Air Force protocol, I have learned to lead. a disciplined life and this has helped me in all my endeavors. Additionally, playing cricket at the university level taught me sportsmanship, empathy and acceptance of defeat. These characteristics have helped me stay calm and perform well under pressure. Alongside my independent studies, courses and projects, interaction with leading scientists at national and international seminars, conferences and workshops shaped my decision to pursue interdisciplinary research.
