  • Essay / An argument against Albania's membership in the European Union

Until the 1990s, Albania was a country ruled by a dictatorial regime, one of the most centralized and isolated among communist countries and one of the last countries to begin a deep-rooted regime. transformation in order to achieve radical democratization and further reforms. Given its history, Albania began its transformation from the poorest economic situation, reaching the status of an emerging country candidate for membership in the European Community. However, this fact has created a division within the Albanian population as well as within other European countries. In fact, the question at hand is: should Albania join the EU? I think Albania should not do this, although some think it should be part of this community, because it could grow economically, there would be more foreign investment and economic support from others country and corruption would also have decreased. There are, however, other disadvantages why Albania should not join the EU. In fact, Albania is not economically prepared to face this change, due to the high level of corruption and organized crime and it should fulfill the economic and legal conditions. People think that Albania should join the EU because corruption and bribery have now decreased and this is an important point accomplished for being part of this community. However, even though Albania has declared an anti-corruption policy since 2009 under Berisha's government, it has not yet reached the standards required by the European Commission. In fact, as Aiste Skardziute's “Corruption in Albania” (2010) reports, Albania's progress is halted by the highest percentage of corruption and he also expresses that the World Bank for controlling corruption de-vin placed Albania in the 50 percent. .... middle of paper ......d by unemployment and it finds itself at low levels of competitiveness in the business environment. Before joining the EU, Albania must create a strong fiscal environment, reducing the high level of unemployment and public debt. To conclude, I think that Albania should not join the EU because it has not reached certain standards required by the Union and also because it still has some problems that it must face. In fact, what prevents Albania's entry into the EU is the lack of economic preparation, the persistent presence of corruption and organized crime and finally, if Albania joins the EU, it will will have to fulfill the economic and legal conditions established by the European Commission, in part losing its fiscal and political independence. Albania needs to resolve some issues and generally improve its economic, legal and social conditions before becoming part of the EU..
