Essay / Characteristics of Revenge as a Revenge Tragedy
Revenge tragedies have certain characteristics that are necessary to follow for it to truly be a revenge tragedy. Although there is a long list of characteristics, they do not all have to be present in the play for it to be revenge. Certain essential characteristics must be involved; two of them focus on planned revenge while including tragic elements. First, for there to be a revenge tragedy, there has to be a murder committed in some way, most likely near the beginning. When a character kills someone, whether it's a loved one or a friend, it gives the person hurt by the situation time to plan revenge to get back at the murderer. For example, at the beginning of The Spanish Tragedy, we see the opening scene with Andrea's ghost. As a reader, we learn that Balthazar murdered Andrea and that Andrea was determined to take revenge for his death.
