  • Essay / Reflecting on Teaching Methods - 1225

In this course, I experienced a significant change in my beliefs about teaching; I realized that there are many different theories and methods that can be adapted to the teacher and student's needs. Readings, notably those of Lyons, G., Ford, M., & Arthur-Kelly, M. (2011), Groundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R., & Le Cornu, R. (2007), and Whitton, D., Barker, K., Nosworthy, M., Sinclair, C., Nanlohy, P. (2010), were particularly helpful to me in understanding this. By writing my essay on teaching methods and other topics, my learning was solidified, my knowledge deepened through my research, and my writing skills honed. How my beliefs about teaching have changed since I started the unit The only belief I had about teaching that has changed since I started this unit is that all teachers, more or less , taught in the same way. Perhaps this is a belief I formed from my days at school, where all my teachers taught the same way; some were more or less effective, but I didn't know that they used theories or methods as such, but rather that they were nice people or not. This belief changed and really opened my ideas to the many creative models and teaching methods a teacher can use. When I started the unit, I thought that unless you sent your child to a Montessori or Steiner school, you were basically having the same pedagogy everywhere you go. Killen (2007) states: “Over the past 30 years, our understanding of how people learned has changed dramatically. New approaches in cognitive research and developmental psychology suggest that learning is a much more individualized process than previously thought” (p. 2). I didn't realize there had been so much research on... middle of article...... it is generally accepted that the primary role of a teacher is to facilitate learning rather than to be the source of all knowledge" (p. .2).In summary, this unit has been extremely beneficial in developing my comprehensive understanding of teaching.Reference ListGroundwater-Smith, S., Ewing, R. and Le Cornu, R.
