  • Essay / A career in engineering - 1432

When people ask me what I want to do for a career, I say I want to become an engineer. People are shocked when they hear this because engineering is a difficult and challenging career. It includes a mixture of subjects such as science, English and a strong foundation in mathematics. Engineering is also an imagination because the engineer will have to invent objects used in daily life or improve objects already used to improve people's environment. Students are not openly exposed to engineering at an early stage, which affects the field of engineering. “Even if the demand for electronics is increasing, the supply of electrical engineers is paradoxically tightening. A study by the National Science Board showed that undergraduate engineering enrollment in the United States has declined since 1986” (The Gale Encyclopedia of Science 2). Various engineering programs should be placed in schools for students because they will be exposed to the engineering environment, they will have first-hand experience and they will be prepared for engineering as a career. Students who wish to pursue a career in an engineering field should be exposed to engineering at an early stage. Engineering is a complex field of study and requires many skills to complete various tasks. One engineering education that must be acquired is science. “Typical modern engineers go through several phases of activity during their career. Formal education must be broad and deep in the sciences and humanities that underlie the particular field” (Barker 2). Students must take courses that expose them to science, math, and English courses that will help prepare them for engineering.
