Iago is manipulative and can convince several people to follow him without realizing what they are doing or without going along with it, making Iago a predominant villain. Then, Alex does not intend to cause the death of others. The death of the old woman and the wife of F. Alexander is not premeditated by Alex. In both cases, the deaths are accidental and not for personal gain. When Alex kills the old woman, he does it because she attacks him and he wants to escape, but Alex hit her too hard, causing her to later die in the hospital (Burgess 47). F. Alexander's wife dies from the trauma caused by Alex's attack. In both examples, Alex does not plan for death, or even think about it at all. On the other hand, Iago has a premeditated plan to bring about the deaths of various characters in the play. By the plan created by Iago, he fully intended to bring about the death of Desdemona. For example, Iago convinces Othello to kill Desdemona in a way that will ultimately benefit him. He said to Othello: “Do not do it with poison; strangle her in her bed, even the bed she has contaminated” (4.1.202-203). Iago's actions through his manipulation are the cause of Desdemona's death and it is all for his own benefit..
