The Impact of Computer Technology Has computer technology improved our society or has it crippled our ability to operate ethically? Computer technology has affected the workplace and compromised our privacy, exposing us to unauthorized use of our personal identity. Our world has become less ethical and it has become very difficult to trust or determine what is authentic. In today's world we live totally in a computerized world and we have lost the human element. Many businesses have migrated their information entirely to computers and software, causing many people to lose their jobs. We are completely dependent on computers and our ability to accomplish tasks on our own has become very limited. Listening to music has become very difficult to enjoy today due to digital equipment that can enhance the sound and make it seem like a great artist when in reality it is just a computer. Computer-generated music takes away the authenticity of a musician. Technology is necessary but has it exposed and invaded our privacy? In our society, almost everything we do requires the use of personal information. Our personal information in the hands of the wrong person could be detrimental. Hacking is unauthorized access to a computer system intentionally releasing computer viruses, according to (Baase 2008). Hacking remains one of the most significant forms of theft, with millions of dollars stolen each year. For many years, hacking did not have such a negative impact on our society and was not taken as seriously as it is today. In previous years, hacking was glorified by young teenagers and even movies made about it. Hacking has now become a tool for identity theft. The part I enjoy the most is the spelling and grammar check. Having been out of college for twenty years, I have lost some technical skills and this program continues to refresh my writing skills. Obviously, we live in a technological world that continues to evolve daily. Computer technology will continue to expose us and yet we will continue to ask ourselves many questions; we need to trust that programmers and engineers are ethical and will do their part to protect us.
