Jung AnSandra HavrilukFRAL1102April 21, 2014Why Dylan Thomas and Emily Dickinson used the theme of death in their poem and what are the effects of metaphorical expressions. Most students who study literature have experienced difficulty when understanding poetry. There are many literary genres; poem, novel, drama, myth, etc. In general, people do not have difficulty understanding a variety of literary genres, except the poem. In the case of a poem, even people read a poem, they don't fully understand what it means. Because unlike other literary genres, poetry is made up of short sentences. Some poems are not made up of grammatically correct sentences. Poetry also has implications. Sometimes words used by a poet have a different meaning, contrary to the original meaning. A figure of speech helps express the subject of a poem more effectively. The theme is linked to a mood and is an important clue to what the poet wants to say. “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night” and “Because I Not Stop for Death” both have a death theme. Compare and contrast the figure of speech and theme of death in the poem "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas and "Because I Couldn't Stop to Die" by Emily Dickinson in this document research. What words are used to express a theme of death in “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night”? And why did Dylan Thomas write “Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night”? “Good night” appeared three times in the poem. The expression evokes death. “Good night” has two meanings. One is death and the other is farewell. “The end of the day” also means the end of life. These sentences express a theme of death. The second line “old age” is “my father” in the sixteenth line. Thomas said "my father" at the end of the last stanza...... middle of paper...... and the fact that there is no door, only a roof (the lid of the coffin), suggests that just as there is no escape from death, there is no escape from the domestic brutalization that marriage brings. Through this research paper, readers could know that poems are implicit in the poets' intention, although they are shorter than any other literary genre. Dylan Thomas and Emily Dickinson used words that told a dark picture expressing a theme of death. Furthermore, these poets narrated the emotions of the poets themselves, indirectly or directly. The metaphorical expression is a figure of speech. Metaphorical expressions are not used in their ordinary sense, but in a different sense as a symbol or image. Thus, the metaphorical expression enriched the poetic expressions in "Because I could not stop to die" and "Don't go softly for a good night.”
