  • Essay / Counseling Reflection Paper - 1379

Before reading these chapters and listening to the lectures, I had thought that empathy was the same thing as sympathy. This took me back to my first counseling session. This was about ten years ago and I was talking to the counselor about my problems at the time. When I looked over to see what she had to say, she was bawling next to me. I had always thought that was what empathy looked like, because I never understood the difference between the two until now. These chapters taught me how important it is to think about what the client told you to make sure you understood everything correctly. Using the skills taught in chapter six, I can ensure that I am giving the client the best use of their time because instead of asking unnecessary questions or just waiting for them to continue talking, I am able to orient the session towards the main problems, with the help of the client. One problem I think I have going out in the workplace is that I will be too quick to assume that I know what the problem is, without checking in with the client to make sure I'm on the same track as them. One way I am going to try to solve this problem is to practice the idea of summarizing in my daily conversations with my family, to ensure that summarizing becomes a force for reflection.
