  • Essay / Animal Shelter Reflection - 1057

There is a commercial for a purebred dog that I see on television that catches my attention and my heart. This tells us not to pity a shelter animal. When I decided to become a veterinary technician, I planned to work in a veterinary office. Unpredictably, I changed my mind. About a year ago, I started volunteering with the Denver Dumb Friends League at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. A shelter isn't always the easiest place to work. However, I feel that this is where I feel most capable of making a difference. There's a lot of grief, but I seem to have a gift for calming and comforting frightened animals, and it makes me feel good. My volunteer role involves assisting with surgery, giving animals their medications, and treating incoming animals. Additionally, I help with humane education, which includes speaking with groups about animal care. There are huge pros and cons to working in a shelter. In the following paragraphs, I will evaluate the shelter setting to decide if this is where I will be most fulfilled. One aspect I enjoy about a shelter is the changing atmosphere. Each visit brings a new experience. Occasionally, exotic pet breeds arrive, like the time animal control introduced a wolf/dog hybrid. It is illegal to own these hybrids, but we have transformed him so he can be taken to a sanctuary. Other times, I witness the birth of kittens and see the amazing scene of a mother and her babies. My favorite experience is when a lost pet is microchipped because we can reunite them with their family. A recent highlight is the story of a family who moved here from Idaho and lost their cat. He was brought to the Buddy Center and we discovered a microchip. We contacted the family and they were delighted. The cat lacked the f...... middle of paper ......ply had more life than the other dogs. If they were human, we would call them wise. They would be the ones who would have stories to tell and stories to write. Those dealt a bad hand responded with courage. Don't pity a shelter dog. Adopt one. And be proud to have their greatness by your side” (Pedigree Adoption Drive). Working at an animal shelter is the best decision for me because of the changing atmosphere, educational opportunities, and my compassion for animals.Quote1. “Pedigree adoption campaign”. Commercial.
