The bee is a fascinating creature that has sparked my interest since I was little. As I explained in my story, bees played an important role in my childhood. The two main types of bees that I remember from my childhood are the bumblebee and the honey bee. With all the plants and flowers in my garden, these two types of bees were prevalent throughout my garden feeding and pollinating. To provide context for my story, I'm going to talk about the bumblebee and the honeybee, as well as Africanized bees and what it means to have an allergic reaction to a bee sting. The first thing I'm going to talk about is the traditional drone. When I think of bees, the bumblebee comes to mind. These bees were all over my garden during spring and summer. As we discussed in class, the bumblebee is a eusocial organism that lives in colonies made up of multiple castes to distribute colony chores. They are very important pollinators for agriculture. Bumblebee species vary in how they store pollen and feed developing larvae. Pollen hoarders accumulate pollen for later use, often reusing released cocoons for this purpose. The queen and workers feed each larva individually, opening their brood cells to regurgitate a mixture of pollen and nectar for them (Colla, Richardson, Williams. 2011). The common oriental bumblebee is called Bombus impatiens (L). These are the type of bees I captured and stored in plastic bottles when I was a child. They are not as aggressive as bees and will only sting you if disturbed. As I was capturing bees while they were feeding on plant nectar, this would be considered disturbing as I would get stung even if I had my gloves on. Nectar is the prima... middle of paper ... American bees that my brother said were killers won't kill you in one hit, they will just send more bees to attack you and that's how it is that they got their nickname. The last and most important thing I learned is that I did not have an allergic reaction to the bee sting. This was only a moderate reaction compared to the mild reactions I had experienced before.
