    When people are asked why they want to become a nurse, they usually respond with an answer similar to: "It's just something I've always wanted to do." But for me, that wasn't the case. When I think about why I aspire to become a nurse, my answer lies in the rapidly growing job security that the nursing career offers and the opportunities for specialization within this broad profession. The main factor that influenced me to choose nursing was the excessive number of opportunities and advancements available to you once you obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing. When making the decision about your career path, it is crucial to choose a degree program that ignites your interests and passion. The potential for advancement within the nursing career is certainly a positive aspect as it allows the ability to grow within the field. Nursing never stagnates and always offers you the opportunity to expand your knowledge further. Qualities, opportunities and goals are a necessity for me when making decisions because it allows me to work towards something and accomplish it. In his book 7 Summits, Hickey (2009) states, “Goals are the dreams that drive us to succeed and pursue our highest goals” (p. 64). Personally, I work extremely well when I start with the end goal in mind, because it makes me notice my own progress. When a person is able to make their own progress in an area they are passionate about, it usually provides motivation and excels in the drive to improve further. While there are many career settings in the military, schools, sports teams, and general family medicine, I definitely see myself working in a hospital emergency department. In about five years, I see myself having recently accomplished my short-term goal of earning my bachelor's degree in nursing and continuing on to my master's degree. I look forward to applying myself and continuing to improve my knowledge for my long-term goal of specializing in trauma as a nurse practitioner. Although the future is unpredictable and I don't know where the course of this career will take me, I would like to see myself working in a hospital on the West Coast, preferably somewhere in California..
