    Grades are important. Whether success or failure, there is no motivation to do better, but rather to do only well enough. A new grading policy that replaces letter grades with pass or fail will not help, but will harm students in the long run. Letter grades encourage students to succeed in school when passing or failing would create laziness. With letter grades, it's easy for students to review their weaknesses and strengths. Becoming aware of your weaknesses helps you recognize your strengths. With the new pass/fail grading system, it would leave no room for improvement because many students would not strive to do much better than mediocre. These children would feel more obliged to succeed than to improve. With pass or failure taking over the letter grading system, the mentality and abilities of many students will most likely deteriorate. Pass or fail offers a very vague understanding of a student's intelligence. This does not reward or benefit the smartest.
