  • Essay / Maintaining Motivation: Educational Goals - 1385

As many of us approach our senior year of high school, we all begin to think seriously about continuing our education and what we want to get out of it. This is also the time when we choose a major and sometimes integrate higher education into our future goals. These educational goals that we set for ourselves from a very young age perfectly reflect our desires, because almost nothing discourages us yet. However, the downside is that in many cases, growing students do not realize just what it takes to achieve the goals they have set for themselves. As a result, many students falter in their pursuit of the initial goal set. There are several common ways in which students deviate from the initial plan. Some students begin their university studies in a desired major and tend to drop out early due to difficulties. Most often, students considering attending graduate school are either discouraged by the extra years or eager to complete their education early. Each of these three cases involves a deviation from the original plan and they can all be avoided using the same applied theories. I conducted research to determine the reasons why people tend to drop out, change majors, and discontinue their studies. Throughout my article, I will include ways to make it easier to achieve initial academic goals while combating discouraging factors.
