  • Essay / Racial and Social Issues in the Movie Remember The Titans

Racism plays an incredibly large role in sports and has existed since other races began participating in the sport. In this film essay, I will discuss and detail how critical race theory and different social issues compare to the great film “Remember The Titans.” “Remember The Titans” is set in Alexandria, a town in northern Virginia. The name of the school in the film is called TC Williams and is set during the time when schools were integrating blacks and whites around 1971. Bill Yoast was the successful white head coach of the TC Williams High School, but when the school was integrated, the school board decided that Bill would no longer be the head coach and gave the position to Herman Boone, an African American. Initially, Bill was going to leave his coaching position at TC Williams because he refused to coach under anyone, let alone an African-American coach. However, when the White players found out that Coach Bill Yoast wanted to move on from TC Williams, they decided to follow him and refused to play for Coach Boone. Since Coach Yoast did not want the boys to leave TC Williams for his decision, he decided that he would assist Coach Boone in coaching. Say no to plagiarism. At first, racial tensions were extremely high between the players. There were many fights and arguments simply because of racial differences. As the camp and season progressed, the players and coaches began to accept each other and they experienced great success in and outside of football. As players began to get along and bond with each other, it began to rub off on the town. Indeed, as the players win and thrive together throughout the season, the city had no choice but to support them and opt for a different color. The titans finished the season with a perfect record and won the state championship and proved that running shouldn't be a factor in sports or anything. It is clear that the main sociological problem in this film is racism in sports. In the film, there were many examples of how white people showed that they would not approve of or associate with black people. Some examples of this are derogatory terms and isolation of black people. For example, early in the film, when Coach Boone was first introduced to the TC Williams coaches, they immediately tried to isolate themselves from Coach Boone. At first glance, an assistant coach said: "Why don't you shout and shout outside with your people?" This quote shows that Coach feels that his race is different than Coach Boone and that he does not believe that whites and blacks should be one. Another example of how white people demonstrated racism was when the team captain, Gerry Bertier, insisted that he would not do this. playing with a bunch of “black animals”. This shows that at this time Gerry viewed black people as animals rather than humans. This is because Gerry thought his race was superior to the African American race rather than equal. These types of opinions may not be expressed as often, but are still present in sports today. For example, the owner of the Houston Texans,..
