There are many types of careers in the cosmetology field. The different types are: hairdresser, permanent or hair coloring specialist, manicurist, pedicurist, barber or beautician. Anyone can specialize in one, several, or all of these careers. No matter their specialization, they will always be considered cosmetologists. To obtain a specialization in cosmetology, it is necessary to take a course in the career that interests you. A typical cosmetology training program usually lasts from nine months to about a year. Students learn hair styling and cutting, scalp treatments, hair coloring, manicures and pedicures, chemical texture services, acrylic nail application, massage, facials and eyebrow shaping. A student then takes advanced courses to further their knowledge in this career. These courses may include studies of scalp disorders and diseases, scalp analysis, color application techniques, hair cutting tools, basic principles of hair design, hair removal, massage techniques and benefits, cosmetology law and safe work practices. Once the course is completed, including service hours, the individual must then take and pass a state exam on the course. Once the exam is passed, the person then receives their certificate. A cosmetologist has many tasks to complete during their day. They do anything from shampooing, to coloring, to cutting or styling hair. They can also remove hair, apply makeup, take care of wigs, as well as take care of nails and skin.
