Essay / Ignorance And Ignorance - 2010
In the film Beast of No Nation, we see how a young boy named Agu is separated from his family due to an ongoing war and joins the NDF. The Commander adopts Agu as his child and teaches him how to survive. In the film, we see Agu hesitant to kill at first, but then uses the hatred he had from seeing his brother and father shot to start killing. Strika, a fellow child soldier, never speaks because he was raped by the commander. Agu is chosen to be the Commander's new student and manipulates him by promising to find his mother to rape him as well. Strika then helps Agu after her rape because he understands her pain. Agu is then forced to take heroin to combat his depression, but they call it a morale booster. What's most sickening is that all of this was happening to children who, at one point, were innocent and pure, but are now part of an army fighting for their lives. The commander then separated from the NDF and was now at war with two camps. Without any recourse from anyone, they end up running out of bullets and food, all the soldiers leave to surrender. We see how a little boy had to stop being with his family and friends to participate in a war he did not decide to participate in. It's sad to see how the ignorance of some could end up changing the lives of many innocent people.
