Their behaviors are often caused by physical or emotional stress. When a caregiver cannot find the root cause of an infant's distress, it can be difficult for the individual to soothe them. There are five main ways a caregiver can address most causes of an infant's stress: swaddling, a side or stomach position, being quiet, rocking, and sucking. However, my youngest niece, Elizabeth, suffers from repeated and uncomfortable bowel problems. For Elizabeth, the best way to relieve her of this discomfort was to allow her to lie on her stomach and gently massage her lower back. Or, lay her on her back and gently massage her stomach until the discomfort goes away. Her parents had to consult a doctor for advice on what formulas she could drink and what methods they could use to relieve her of this discomfort. In this case, the cause of the difficult behavior was not the environment or the result of caregivers, but the result of poor digestion.
