Marian devotion in the history of the Catholic Church has played an important role in enlivening the practice of faith among believers. Devotional practices have been maintained from generation to generation thanks to Marian apparitions, miracles and signs. Faithful eyewitnesses bear witness to Mary through their experiences and visions, so that powerful Marian messages can be spread, and these messages have become central theological cores of devotion in every community of faith. This is also true for Marian devotion in Vietnam. Our Lady of La Vang is becoming an impressive phenomenon of faith practice for Vietnamese Catholic communities and individuals around the world. Coming from an oral tradition, Vietnamese Catholics gradually and authentically pay homage to Our Lady of La Vang and strive to maintain a Vietnamese tradition of Marian devotion, a classic and different “version” with a common development of world devotion . Such strong devotion was likely influenced by cultural, political and theological elements as hidden motivations that need to be explored when mapping Our Lady of La Vang onto global Marian devotion. According to his book Miracles of Mary (published in 1995), Michael S. Durham reports that there have been "more than twenty-one thousand" Marian apparitions over the past ten centuries.
