  • Essay / Review - 1006

Reviews of the book “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin show mixed reviews. Chopin describes this particular book as a sort of gritty thriller in which one character, "Edna", ends up committing suicide. Most reviews are extremely critical of the main characters Edna and Robert. They describe Edna as weak and helpless. This is in some ways true, but there are many underlying issues that play a huge role in this negative bias against Edna. You will see how other characters such as Robert negatively affect Edna Pontellier and vice versa. Interestingly, the first two reviews seem to tell different stories. A critic named CL Deyo responded very critically about Robert. In one instance, the reviewer disparages Roberts' career by saying that "brokers trade in stocks, not hearts." (Deyo) This is a rather abrupt thought and it is said without any other details from Robert. HS Stone & Co., Chicago responds to Robert in a non-judgmental manner, which balances the character. This caused many emotions for Edna, who...... middle of paper...... might have different views. The Globe goes on to say: "She walks in water until she can walk farther, then swims into eternity; her very suicide is thought to be itself a prayer for deliverance from the evils that plague her." 'assault, all his own. create. » The reader could think optimistically or pessimistically depending on their morals. In conclusion, the reviews based on “The Awakening” were not detailed enough. Most of the time, whenever a reviewer wrote about a specific character, they wouldn't explain why they thought that way. This shows that throughout the book the reviewer has created a negative bias and because of this the character will receive a bad review. Some reviews seemed extremely critical of why Chopin was writing such a piece. Overall, the reviews showed both sides of Edna and Robert, which was meant to be..
