  • Essay / Democracy vs Democracy - 938

First, democracy is the most used government in the world today. The word democracy comes from two Greek words: demos, or “people,” and cracy, or “rule of” (Lansford 9). Democratic government increases the demand for ordinary citizens to have a voice in government, which means that all citizens participate. directly or indirectly in the proposition, development and creation of law. The main goal of democracy is to defeat tyranny or rule by a single person or small groups of people. Second, a dictatorship is where all power is concentrated in the hands of one person. Most dictators were monarchies in which the rulers were called princes or princesses, kings or queens, and emperors or empresses. Most dictators are initiated by the military. A general or other military leader uses force under his command to take control of the government. Third, an oligarchy is a type of government often controlled by powerful families. “An oligarchy is a form of government in which most political power effectively rests with a small segment of society, usually those people who have the most wealth, military strength, cruelty, or political influence” (“ Oligarchy"). In today's world, many citizens are unhappy because they feel like they don't have a say in government. Abraham Lincoln mentioned in his Gettysburg Address that democracy means “government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” One thing about democracy is that democracy is the best way to show equality and freedom to everyone because democracy brings people together to talk about their problems so that the government can try to find a solution to the problem. Democracy can satisfy citizens by showing them equality. and freedom, but Tom Lans... middle of paper ...... he doesn't vote and has to put up with whatever their tyrannical leaders decide to do to them” (American construction). The biggest difference between oligarchy and democracy is that oligarchy is controlled by powerful people and democracy is ruled by the people. Oligarchies can be used for transformative purposes, insisting that monarchs or dictators share power. Some advantages of oligarchic government are that decisions are made quickly, experts lead and avoid being ruled by one, leaders are the most educated, and oligarchies work together to govern effectively. The disadvantages of oligarchic government are that the needs and desires of citizens are not taken into account and most leaders pass laws in favor of influential people. Only privileged people have a say in electing their leaders, and things get done faster and more efficiently than they do. no need to discuss it with a lot of people.
