My plans after completing my graduate degree are to acquire licensure to practice as an AGNP in the State of Texas. The Texas BON recognizes that APNs vary in their training, experiences, and skill levels and therefore holds each APN accountable for knowledge and practice within their own scope of practice and skill set. The AFN's training constitutes the foundation of its scope of practice: however, the APN may expand its scope of practice based on its role and population, provided that this remains within the limits of the law. The Texas BON restricts the scope of practice of APNs. Nurse practitioner supervision laws require the APN to work under the supervision of a physician within a seventy-five mile radius. Additionally, there are Texas nurse practitioner prescribing laws that require APNs to prescribe medications under the supervision of a physician and APNs are not permitted to prescribe schedule two medications.
