A Man's Best FriendFor many of us, the animals in our lives are our loyal friends who make us laugh, keep us company, and love us whatever happens. But a man's best friend doesn't have to be a dog; I believe that any animal can be considered man's best friend. On the other hand, there are many animals that are not as fortunate as other animals. For these animals, life on the streets is hard. Most animals on the streets often suffer from hunger, diseases, tumors, skin infections and open wounds. They often fought over the limited quantities of food found on the streets. They seek food and shelter in communities and are sometimes considered a nuisance and health hazard by the people who live alongside them. Research shows that around 2.7 million cats and dogs are put down each year, or about one every 11 seconds. Often, most of these animals are beloved and adoptable pets. “A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than it loves itself (Josh Billing).” The main reasons animals end up in a shelter are because their owners abandon them or animal control finds them on the street. Homeless animals are also lost animals that have not been kept properly indoors. Homeless animals outnumber homeless people five to one, and one in ten dogs born will find a permanent home, according to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy. Additionally, less than 2 percent of cats and only 15 to 20 percent of dogs are surrendered. to their owners when they are lost. Approximately more than 13,000 healthy or treatable animals were killed out of 54,129 admitted to city shelters last year.
