  • Essay / Descartes' Dualism and Determinism - 2316

1.) In your own words, describe Descartes' “dualism” and describe determinism. You will need about two large paragraphs. (2 pts.) Dualism was René Descartes' understanding of psychology. He felt that humans were influenced by the distinct response of the mind and body. Descartes' view makes me think of a past life, essentially where you reincarnated someone else's soul into your body. Which makes two. He felt that your physical body was different from the mind and soul that caused you to react. We still use some of Descartes' ideas in sayings today. I used the saying “My mind says one thing but my heart tells me another.” As if the two have different points of view or needs. Determinism is a view that everything has already been arranged and planned as it is going to be. I believe the name determinism comes from the idea that it is “predetermined” as if it were destiny or destiny. You react based on your internal and external environment already created for you.
