Air pollution and inadequate housing are the major and serious physical environmental problems for urban Americans. Most communities of color live near power plants, high-tech industries like oil refineries and leather tanning, or near waste management facilities. For example, 71% of African Americans live in cities and counties that do not meet federal air pollution standards, 68% live near a coal-fired power plant, and the majority live in non-green spaces or less green. Many researchers also say that more than 80% of homes built before 1978 are covered in lead-based paint, which explains why the likelihood of lead poisoning is high among minority population groups.
