Methane is an odorless, colorless and tasteless gas, lighter than air. It is a nonpolar molecule and insoluble in water. It dissolves in non-polar solvents like alcohol. Sources of MethaneMethane has anthropogenic and natural sources. It is produced by the decomposition of organic matter under certain specific conditions when oxygen is lacking. For example in cattle stomachs, wet rice fields and waste deposits. Methane is also produced when pumping oil, mining coal, and burning forests generate certain amounts of methane. Pumping oil can result in the emission of a very large amount of methane since it is the main source of methane, it is also emitted during the transportation, processing, distribution and transportation of natural gas .
