Every person in the developed world uses communication technologies daily, if not hourly. Communication technologies have created the information superhighway and made the immense wealth of human knowledge available to anyone with an Internet connection. As a result, communications technology has expanded our scope of thinking beyond our own community and allowed us to gain insight into other cultures. We use technology in various contexts, such as at home, at work or even in more extreme situations, such as on the battlefield. Advances in communication have allowed workers with disabilities to re-enter the workforce and helped students graduate without ever setting foot in a classroom. While communications technology has the ability to connect various units in a war zone so that they can simultaneously plan and fight as a single force, rather than as fragmented pockets. Regardless, the definition of humanity is constantly changing, but it is humans who make these changes, not machines or microchips. Technological advances in communications have made information more accessible - seemingly ubiquitous - thereby connecting homogeneous societies and creating a global community. Communications technology has evolved exponentially over the millennia, laying the essential foundations necessary for today's global society. The modern digital lifestyle and instant communication have their roots in interpersonal communication and group communication around the campfires of ancient times. Humanity's inherent need to disseminate opinions and information led to technological advances in this area such as movable type printing, the telegraph, mass circulation newspapers, and ultimately the Internet. Society uses communication technology as a tool to accomplish a task, just as man developed stone tools for cutting meat three million years ago. The fusion of humans and technology has changed what it means to be human, but has not diminished our humanity. Thoughts, ideas, cultures will continue to be shared across the world and transform our species; However, humanity remains master of its own destiny.
