As shockwaves coursed through the Columbine victims after the shooting, people wanted to direct their anger at someone or something. They were looking for anything or anyone who helped the killers carry out the destruction. Blame was initially pointed at the Jeffco Sheriff's Department due to the department's rare but critical errors. Many believed the police took far too long to gain control of the situation and reach the victims who had been shot. The time it took for the SWAT team resulted in many unnecessary deaths. “SWAT teams searched the building for more than three hours, but the killers remained dead the entire time” (Cullen 83). Dave Sanders was shot just minutes after the shooting began and survived three hours. “[Dave's family's] impression was that twelve victims had disappeared once the bullets left the chambers, but Dave had held on for over three hours” (138).
