  • Essay / The Effects of Climate Change - 1189

While it is true that there are natural phenomena that can produce effects similar to climate change, these effects are not sufficient to cause the current level of climate change. Natural events that can cause similar effects include variations in sunlight and volcanic activity. In fact, before the Industrial Revolution, these events changed the climate, albeit minimally. The term “sunlight variations” refers to changes in the sun and where it hits the atmosphere. There are tiny oscillations in Earth's orbit that are changed when and where sunlight hits the Earth's surface. Additionally, the sun itself sometimes has variations in the amount of solar energy it produces, which affects the amount Earth receives. Volcanic activity is another way the climate is naturally affected. Volcanoes erupt and send ash into the air. The ashes reflect sunlight, illuminating the planet and this affects the climate. Volcanoes have also increased greenhouse gases over millions of years in the very distant past. Science has determined that the extent of current climate change cannot be caused primarily by natural events. So why do people continue to deny the truth about man-made climate change? The majority of this group is Republican. Republican
