  • Essay / Personal Statement for Social Work - 858

During my volunteer work, I encountered countless people who avoided or disrespected children and adults with mental problems. I will never forget this day when I was playing football with the children with Down syndrome, a crowd of young boys were laughing at them and humiliating them loudly. Such stigma indicates that mental health discrimination is still significant and persistent in our society, despite its rapid development. It is an indisputable truth that every person has inherent worth and dignity, and that every individual in our society is unique and valuable. With the help of professional support and training, empowering vulnerable and challenged people to improve their well-being is no longer an extremely difficult task. I witnessed the improvement of children with Down syndrome, this made me firmly believe that every person has an inherent ability and desire for change, which can make life more fulfilling, the mentally ill are no exception. All these personal experiences have further instilled in me the desire to become a social actor.
