  • Essay / Cultural Sensitivity: The Transitional Learning Center

Educational FrameworkThe Transitional Learning Center (TLC) is a four-day-a-week program for students with disabilities ages 18-21. The goal of the program is to assist special education students in their transition from school to the community and the world of work. The TLC teacher, career specialist, and three paraeducators work with students to achieve the goals of their individualized education plan (IEP). Students spend the beginning and end of their day at TLC which is housed in a portable equipped with a kitchen, restrooms containing a washer and dryer, meeting space and a computer lab. The program also has a classroom available in the main high school building, which has an active board to use for instruction. On the first day of the week, students typically go on a community field trip to experience recreational and leisure activities, pedestrian safety, and transportation training. Three days a week, paraeducators serve as career coaches to help students develop their career skills at work-based training sites throughout the community. These training sites include the local YMCA, senior center, retail warehouse, golf course, restaurant and screen printing company. Students also receive services from the district's speech-language pathologist and occupational therapist as indicated by IEPs. AudienceThe group of learners is made up of ten special education students, aged 18 to 21. Students are one credit away from earning a Washington State Certificate of Individual Achievement. Prior to the transition, students participated in the school district's life skills program, resource and enrichment programs, or a combination of both program components. One student is Hi...... middle of paper...... others may need photos to follow along. Many members of this group will benefit greatly from demonstration and rehearsal. With some effort, most students might be able to self-monitor and self-assess their actual skill level. Another accommodation available in the transition program is the availability of paraeducators working with small groups or individuals on specific skills. Achieving good hygiene and personal care will have a positive impact on the student's employment situation and, in many cases, improve the quality and availability of employment opportunities.
