Essay / Civil disobedience - 1362
When should civil disobedience be tolerated? Should we tolerate it? Civil disobedience is defined as the refusal to obey government laws, with the aim of bringing about a change in government policy or legislation. Civil disobedience is not an attempt to dissolve the American government, because without government our society would end in chaos. Sometimes, when there is an unjust law and the government does not take the initiative to correct it, the public must act in civil disobedience to raise awareness and correct the unjust law. An unjust law is one that is not moral and does not respect the “God-given” rights that are recognized to every person. A law that grants freedom to some but not others, based on gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs and non-beliefs, race, age, etc. is an unjust law. Civil disobedience is justified when its goal is to obtain equal rights and service for all, without causing physical harm to people and their property, and without violating just laws already in force. Furthermore, it should only be practiced when the government fails to uphold justice and pass laws that do not grant everyone the same rights already granted to some. An attribute of humanity's progression in American history has been to oppose injustices for better and better. equal treatment for all. A widespread symbol of this struggle was the Declaration of Independence written by Thomas Jefferson. It can be said that many immigrants have migrated and continue to flee their countries to the United States of America for better and more equal life opportunities. After breaking free from the British Parliament in a quest for independence, our ancestors made the United States a country...... middle of paper ...... from the Declaration of Independence to the rights movement through civil disobedience has been a great tribute to the progress of humanity in the fight for equal treatment, only when it does not physically harm others or their property, and also when it does not contravene a just law already in force. Those who correctly follow civil disobedience find it necessary, like King and his followers, to endure struggle and conflict in order to correct an injustice. These truly disobedient civilians find strength in nonviolence that comes from their willingness to take risks without threatening others or their property. They view civil disobedience as an attribute that can help them when law and justice do not go hand in hand. Civil disobedience, when used inappropriately, can harm many people. However, when used correctly, it can contribute to equal rights and justice for all..
