In business, the focus is on profit and growth, not always on sustainability. Growth can be good for the Church, as we saw previously, but it cannot overcome Church culture. Stonebraker (1993), in his research on optimal church size, acknowledges that larger churches require less money to operate per congregation, but he also recognizes that more congregations are engaged in service per congregation. Business and ministry can focus on programming and systems that take away from the individuals, who are the Church. Businesses tend to operate from a top-down leadership perspective, with management answering to shareholders. Church leaders answer to stakeholders, so they must find a way to work together in a way that business leaders do not. Businesses have paid employees; volunteers mainly take care of the affairs of the
