Sustainable buildings are becoming somewhat of a necessity in today's world. As the demand for green buildings grows, so does the demand for green building materials. While old construction techniques and materials seem to disappear in the assembly of objects, they are now making a comeback. Green building focuses on the efficiency of key resources like water and energy. As the cost of sustainable materials and products is falling, green building appears to be the most cost-effective type of design and construction. Looking specifically at green materials and their impact on the production of structures, it is evident that they are a top choice for building materials. The use of green materials should be encouraged because they are better for the environment, healthier for the consumer and better for the economy. Using green materials is better for the environment because they have a positive impact on the planet. Looking at our environment today, we see a place that has faced massive climate change. Scientists have been concerned about global warming for decades. It is estimated that the continued increase in Earth's temperature is due to the greenhouse effect (“Global Warming” 27). Building with green materials produces significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, wood, as a material for construction products, requires significantly less energy than other construction products such as steel and concrete. Manufacturing wood products results in reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants (“green building benefits”). Green building also results in reduced waste.
