Essay / A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams very different floor from the prestigious residence where Stella comes from. This prestige is alive and well in Stella's sister, Blanche Du Bois. During Blanche's life, she experienced many tragedies that had a profound impact on her, such as the death of her homosexual husband, the subsequent decline in her mental health, and, more recently, the loss of her wealth and thus of his social status. She constructs a proverbial lampshade to mask her pain and control the last part of her world that she is capable of, the image she projects into the world for herself and others. The brooding prince in William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" chooses a very similar way to cope with the fate life has dealt him. When his mother remarries his uncle only a month after his father's death, the ghost of Hamlet's father visits the young prince to seek revenge. These events cause Hamlet to try to replace the old lampshade that has helped him cope with reality by changing his own image and making others believe that he is crazy. An examination of both plays reveals that the importance of subjective truths and how Blanche and Hamlet use them to cope transcend the context of both plays. Blanche's lampshade is the filter of all the harsh realities of life that she prefers not to face. . In a scene with Stanley's friend Mitch, Blanche tells Mitch to cover a light bulb with a Chinese lampshade: "I can't stand a bare light bulb, nor a rude remark or a vulgar action" (1837 ). In this scene, Blanche blatantly tells off the other characters and middle of paper ......e becomes a misanthrope who contemplates suicide and withdraws from the company of others. Through these fictional characters, readers can understand the importance of choosing healthy ways to cope with terrible events that occur in their lives rather than the dysfunctional ways the characters choose.
