There are many different diagnoses of mental problems these days, from anxiety disorders to eating disorders and from mood disorders to obsessive-compulsive disorders. However, I chose to write about schizophrenia because I believe this type of disorder is one of the most dangerous mental problems. Throughout this article, I will describe the criteria doctors use to diagnose someone with schizophrenia as well as the specific DSM-5 diagnostic criteria. This will include clinical symptoms of schizophrenia such as positive, negative and disorganized symptoms. I will also discuss the etiology and medical and psychological treatments of schizophrenia. Finally, I will write about the impact of this disorder on the person and the people around them in the real world. “Schizophrenia is a mental disorder characterized by disturbances in thought, emotion and behavior - disorders of thought, in which ideas are not logically related. ; faulty perception and attention; lack of emotional expressiveness or, sometimes, inappropriate expressions; and movement and behavior disorders, such as a disheveled appearance. »() As you can see, there is a wide range of symptoms used to diagnose schizophrenia, but most of the time, a person with schizophrenia only has a few of these symptoms. This makes schizophrenia a difficult disorder to stereotype because no main symptom must be present to be diagnosed. The DSM-5 criteria for a diagnosis of schizophrenia are defined as having two or more symptoms for at least one month. Symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, and negative symptoms such as reduced motivation or emotional expression. Delusions, middle of paper, are serious deficiencies in social relationships. Asocialized schizophrenics have few friends and may not desire close relationships with other people. They also have poor social skills and a general disinterest in others. The third negative symptom is anhedonia. It is the loss or diminution of pleasure. There are two types of pleasure but the main one is the pleasure of anticipation which is diminished in schizophrenics. “Thus, the anhedonia deficit in schizophrenia appears to be anticipatory pleasure. » () Blunted affect is the fourth negative symptom of schizophrenia. This refers to the lack of outward expression of emotions. This symptom is characterized by the person staring, facial muscles still, or eyes lifeless. Finally, the fifth negative symptom is alogia. People with alogy have severe speech reduction.
