  • Essay / First Impressions - 963

First impressions are always used to set the tone when meeting someone for the first time. Without the luxury of knowing the person's background, you first judge someone by how that person presents themselves and how they present themselves to you. By “appear” I mean the way a person behaves. For example, if the person seems shy and introverted, you tend to view them as shy and somewhat weak. However, if that same person comes across as outgoing, confident (but not overly so), and easy to talk to, you view them as someone you can rely on and perhaps a leader. This type of assessment (even though we all do it) is usually not always the right way to evaluate a person. Studies have been done on first impressions and how they affect you in managing trust. An experiment was conducted by the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University, using a computer program and university students. (Live Science. 2009) In this study, students interacted with a computer program during seventy rounds of business transactions. These business transactions, when completed, would either allow the partnership to make money, or if your trust was betrayed, only your partner (the computer) would make money. As a result, the computer program violated the students' trust, for some, from the start of the exercise and for others, ten to thirty rounds after the start of the exercise. It was found that about seventy percent of the students betrayed at the beginning did not trust the computer (their simulated partner) at the end. However, students betrayed after ten rounds trusted the computer at a rate of ninety percent by the end of the exercise.
