Welcome Home by Jack Levine and City Landscape by Francis Criss are pieces that can be seen in “American Moderns, 1910-1960 From O'Keeffe to Rockwell.” » at the Reynolda House, on loan from the Brooklyn Museum. The two pieces seem very different at first glance, and this is true to some extent. The main similarity between the two, of course, is that they were both made by American artists during the modern art era. Welcome Home was made in 1946, while City Landscape was made in 1934. The most obvious difference between the two pieces is the subject matter. Levine's article focuses on people, such as a war general, his acquaintances, and a waiter. They are all in a very fancy place, dressed to the nines and served by a waiter in a suit with a bow tie. Criss, however, chose to focus on one location. His work focuses on the urban landscape, as the title indicates. We see buildings, cars, streetlights, sidewalks, and other features of New York City. When we look at these things, it is best to use certain modes of analysis. Levine created works of art that showed how corrupt and unfair he thought America was. Welcome Home is a satirical work in which he mocks the major general of the army in which he himself served during World War II. The contextual analysis mode can be used to examine this work because it was made just after World War II and is set within the context of the historical period. Biographical analysis can also be used, since Levine was so heavily influenced by what he saw in the military, and he therefore displayed his strong opinions against what he considered "undemocratic" leaders. 1 When looking at City Landscape, it is best to use a contextual mode of analysis. This piece was made in ...... middle of paper ......nd. The sizes of everything seem more realistic and proportional. We have the impression of actually being in front of this scene which takes place under the open sky and which extends over a long distance. The biggest similarity between the two pieces is in their medium. Levine and Criss chose to create their pieces using oil on canvas. The two pieces are very different in terms of the elements and principles used, as well as the appearance of each piece. However, what is amazing is that two artists used oil paint and canvas to create these two very different works of art.Works Cited1. "Biography | Jack Levine online." Jack Levine RSS online.
