Essay / Stuffed and Hungry by Raj Patel - 1325
In the novel Stuffed and Hungry by Raj Patel, Patel reviews all aspects of the food production process taking into account the experiences of everyone involved in food production from all over the world. Patel concludes by blaming big business and governments for their crucial role in undermining local, cultural and sustainable eating patterns and, in doing so, causing today's major food-related problems, such as starvation and obesity. In this book of serious facts and crimes, Patel's Stuffed and Starved is a general but accessible analysis of global food struggles that aims to enlighten and motivate the general Western public that there is something serious problem that is wrong with our food system. are some main points covered by Patel. One is that it focuses on huge food corporations and describes how they act as bottlenecks in the global food distribution system. What he means by bottlenecks is that there are a massive number of producers and consumers, but between the producers and consumers there are only a few dominant processors and distributors who dominate their sector of the food industry (21). Patel also tells us that we want to think we're making our own choices when we decide what to eat, but it's actually quite the opposite. A second objective of the work is to determine the epidemics of hunger and obesity, as well as their links. Patel says people who are stuffed – by which he means obese – are starving because they're eating empty calories that make them fat, but don't provide them with any nutrition. The idea of the family farm has been destroyed by big food companies. . As discussed in class, industrial agriculture generally leads to mass production...... middle of paper ...... the slow food movement consists of five different chapters (Gupta). I think this lessened the impact that could have had if they were all in the same chapter. Another thing that has been left out is the food system in China. Otherwise, this was an excellent book and should be read by anyone who wants to gain more knowledge about the food system and how it works. Works Cited “FarmAid”. Page not found – Agricultural aid.
