The Canadian justice system needs improvement; however, the manner in which citizens are convicted and punished is entirely systematic. In the article, Sapers questions the justice system's commitment to inclusion and social justice. It explains how "the Canadian prison system must address this cultural change by introducing more culturally relevant programs, increasing staff speaking languages other than English and French, and recommending that ethnic liaison officers be placed in Canadian establishments” (Barrett, 4). These programs are desired; conversely, it should be noted that the intention of prison is to remove a person from their deviant self and rehabilitate them into an individual less likely to deviate in society. For this reason, placing these programs in detention centers would defeat the purpose of the prison. By housing these prisoners; they will never learn anything from their mistakes and they will always depend on prison to support them. That being said, inmates should not be excited about being in prison and do everything possible to ensure that they never return to prison once they have served their sentence. Another key point is that if these programs were implemented to make confinement more pleasant, inmates would not want to come out and would deviate further to get a longer sentence. This will result in more Canadian taxpayer dollars being wasted as there will be more people in lockdown. Instead, these programs could be used in Canadian society for people who actually need them.
