Essay / Realism in Theater - 1110
The plays "Angels in America" and "August: Osage County", the two playwrights, create a heartbreaking, heartbreaking and astonishing work. Each character is developed to have their own values, beliefs and attitudes towards life and therefore no two characters are the same. With each character having their own identity, this brings a sense of excitement and unpredictability into the plays. Tracy Letts, the writer of “August: Osage County,” establishes a sense of reality in her play by developing characters that everyone can relate to as well. His play is about family, drug use, cancer and suicide, topics that people go through during their lives. Tony Kushner, the playwright of “Angels in America,” offers the same sense of realism in his play, showing his characters dealing with prescription drug addiction, terminal illness and relationship tribulations. There are many similarities between these two plays, such as the use of realism, the characters being part of unhealthy relationships, and suffering from life-threatening illnesses. There aren't many differences between these two plays, but one in particular is that in "August: Osage County" the entire play takes place in an upstairs house, in a kitchen, a patio or in a living room, while "Angels in America" Some scenes take place in the hospital, office and bedroom. As can be seen, these two plays are more similar than different and also incorporate realism into the production. For a play to be considered realism, Janie Jones suggests that [the play] must contain the idea of the stage as an environment, rather than as an acting platform (Jones). Actors are trained never to turn their backs on the audience. This is evident when the chara...... middle of paper ...... Prior will die due to this disease. Prior has accepted his condition and knows that death is inevitable, but he will continue to push until the end. This type of strength of Prior describes what every terminally ill person goes through, his courage to not give up and to know that time is not on his side. Tony Kushner allows the reader to follow Prior and Roy, a successful New York lawyer, fight against AIDS and watch them suffer from this terrible disease. The realistic nature of this play is incredible and as a reader you become devoted to these characters and the need to know what their future entails for them becomes necessary.
